Job summary

City of Durham is seeking a Building Inspector to enforce codes, review building plans, and inspect electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and related systems in the city. The role ensures compliance with municipal, state, and federal regulations and supports remediation efforts.

Responsibilities include responding to complaints, conducting site visits, documenting evidence, testifying in court when required, and coordinating with residents, contractors, and other departments.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Three years of related experience.
• Valid, unrestricted NC driver’s license or ability to obtain within 60 days.
• NC Building Level I Standard Certificate or AACE/ICC within 18 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Perform code enforcement and respond to complaints; inspect properties for violations.
• Document findings with reports, photos, and records; maintain files.
• Coordinate with residents, contractors, and other departments; testify in court if needed.
• May serve as lead worker, supervise assignments.
• Inspect housing and building codes per NC statutes; identify violations.
• Notify owners and issue stop work orders; monitor remediation.
