Job summary

VDOT is seeking a bridge maintenance worker in Suffolk, VA to repair, maintain and replace bridges and related structures in accordance with safety standards and VDOT specifications. The role emphasizes carpentry, welding, concrete finishing, and operation of light to medium-duty equipment with safety and teamwork at its core.

Responsibilities include emergency operations, environmental protection, traffic control, and preventative maintenance, plus inspections and compliance with DOT/OSHA

Qualifications

• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
• Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
• Ability to work at heights, over and, or in water, in heavy traffic and under other adverse conditions.
• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
• Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment, as well as in the use of hand and power tools.
• Valid Driver's License.

Responsibilities

• Perform skilled tasks including carpentry, welding and concrete finishing; remove and install structural components.
• Place temporary bridges, remove damaged structures, and operate equipment for snow and ice removal; provide traffic control.
• Apply in-stream and environmental protection measures during maintenance and construction activities.
• Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
• Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection; identify hazards and follow safety rules.
• Participate as a working crew member; perform manual labor to support construction and repair of bridge elements.
• Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools; complete pre-trip inspections.
