Job summary

VDOT is seeking skilled construction workers to perform carpentry, welding and concrete finishing, and to erect, replace or demolish structures as part of a crew on highway projects. The role covers emergency operations, equipment operation, environmental protection, safety responsibilities and preventative maintenance to keep bridges and roads in safe, reliable condition.

Qualifications

• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment and safety practices.
• Safety shoes required.

Responsibilities

• Construct and maintain bridges and related structures, including carpentry, welding and concrete work.
• Perform emergency operations and place temporary structures as needed.
• Operate light to medium-duty highway equipment for maintenance tasks.
• Apply safety rules, wear PPE and follow MUTCD for work zones and detours.
• Conduct preventative maintenance and basic repairs on tools and equipment.
