Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking workers to repair, maintain, and replace bridges and structures in Virginia. You will perform carpentry, welding and concrete finishing, and operate light to medium-duty highway equipment as part of a crew.

Responsibilities include placing temporary bridges during emergencies, ensuring safety, and applying environmental protection measures. A CDL/DOT medical card within 11 months is required, with strong emphasis on teamwork and physical endurance.

Qualifications

• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months and comply with DOT/VDOT policies.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
• Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
• Ability to work at heights, in heavy traffic, over and in water, and under adverse conditions.
• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices.
• Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
• Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment and hand/power tools.

Responsibilities

• Construct, repair, and replace bridges and structures using carpentry, welding and concrete finishing.
• Place temporary bridges and support emergency operations including snow/ice removal and traffic control.
• Apply environmental protection measures during maintenance and construction work.
• Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment for maintenance tasks.
• Maintain site safety, PPE usage, and compliance with OSHA/VDOT policies.
• Assist crew with manual labor and the upkeep of timber, steel, and concrete elements.
• Perform preventative maintenance and pre-trip inspections on equipment.
