Job summary

City of New York seeks an Assistant Civil Engineer to inspect bridges and oversee contractor maintenance for East River movable bridges. The role involves field surveys, designing plans, and coordinating safety and regulatory compliance on site in LIC, with a standard 7:00 AM–3:00 PM schedule.

The position emphasizes independent judgment, supervision of staff, and preparation of technical drawings and specifications, contributing to NYC infrastructure safety.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
• A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering technology and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
• A bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university.

Responsibilities

• Perform civil engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility; may supervise subordinates.
• Inspect and oversee preventive maintenance work by contractors on the East River and Movable Bridges.
• Prepare design plans, sketches, working drawings, maps, and technical specifications.
• Engage in investigations and studies pertaining to bridge inspections; ensure safety and governmental standards are maintained.
• Schedule work, complete daily reports (MURK forms), and maintain Engineer's diary.
