Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is hiring an Equipment Operator to perform skilled manual labor and operate heavy machinery such as excavators, backhoes, dozers, and rollers on highway and bridge projects. This on-site role involves coordinating traffic control and assisting in bridge construction tasks.

Requirements include one year of related work experience, a valid driver's license, and the goal of obtaining a Class A CDL within six months.

Qualifications

• One (1) year of related work experience.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

• Operates excavator, backhoe, dozer, front end loader, lowboy trailer truck tractor, and motor grader in highway/bridge construction, repair and preservation work.
• Operates tandem dump trucks with trailers for material hauling and equipment transport during maintenance and construction.
• Operates pile driver, skid steer, and large rollers (>4 tons) in bridge construction/repair.
• Uses small and power tools for bridge construction and repair including demolition, formwork, beam repair, spall repair, and painting.
• Signals crane operator during bridge construction/repair activities and assists in rigging lifted materials.
• Coordinates traffic control device placement for work zones per the SCDOT Manual and supports emergency or inclement weather operations.
• Operates salt brine anti-icing equipment and snow plow/sand spreader for winter maintenance.
