Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a capable Highway Maintenance Worker to perform general maintenance and to operate heavy and medium equipment for bridge-related projects across the state highway system.

Primary duties include grading, mowing, concrete work, form setting, painting, and installing steel components while maintaining traffic control in work zones. CDL is required within six months; extended hours may be required during weather events.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience.
• Requires attainment of Class A CDL within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Perform general highway maintenance and repair duties.
• Operate heavy equipment (backhoe, mini excavator, lowboy trailer) to fix bridge deficiencies.
• Operate medium equipment (skid steer, tandem dump truck) for bridge construction, repair, and preservation tasks.
• Conduct concrete work (pouring/finishing) and install steel sections as part of bridge projects.
• Set up and maintain traffic control in work zones per the manual.
• Assist in emergency and severe weather operations; may require extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
