Job summary

Inchcape Shipping Services is seeking an Operations Representative (Boarding Agent) to manage port operations, boarding procedures, and vendor coordination. You will support safe, efficient vessel turnaround and be part of a 24/7 on-call service for Principals.

Ideal candidates have a grounding in port operations, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently with limited supervision while ensuring high standards of customer service and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Associate degree in Maritime Transportation or related major preferred.
  • TWIC eligibility or ability to obtain TWIC within 30 days of appointment.
  • Must have own reliable transportation and valid driver’s license.
  • US work eligibility is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide logistics services to Principals for safe vessel turnaround.
  • Procure vendor services and assist with vessel boarding as required.
  • Ensure operations are compliant with maritime regulations and company standards.
  • Support 24/7 on-call services for Principals.

Contract type: Temporary/Full time

Business Need / Purpose of Role:

The Operations Representative (Boarding Agent) under the direction of the Operations Manager is responsible for providing logistics service to our Principals to ensure the safe and smooth turnaround of all appointed vessels within the jurisdiction of the port office, managing vessel requirements, procurement of relevant vendor services, and undertaking vessel boarding as required. The agent plays a critical role in delivering safe, efficient, and customer-focused operations in compliance with maritime regulations and company standards. Will exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to operational matters of significance to the business and our customers.

The agent performs office and non-manual work assisting Inchcape in the running and servicing Inchcape’s 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week on-call services commitments to its Principals.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Foundational knowledge of Port Operations and Port Agency services.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision, multitask and possess strong initiative, exercise independent judgment within established systems and procedures.
  • Possess organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize, be detail oriented and results driven.
  • Attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, including strong verbal and listening skills.
  • Ability to board vessels via gangway and/or pilot ladder alongside berth and over open water.
  • Climbing, ascending, descending ladders, stairs, ramps using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions (cold, heat, wind, rain, snow).
  • Must possess advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook.

Education, Qualifications, Certifications, And Licenses

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Associate degree in Maritime Transportation or related major in a public or accredited private academic institution preferred
  • Prior experience in marine agency field desired, but not required.
  • Transitioning military personnel and veterans are encouraged to apply.
  • Eligibility to work in the US.

Licenses:

  • Agents are expected to travel around specific port/terminal locations and surrounding areas and must possess their own reliable transportation, a valid "non-expired" state drivers' license, and vehicle insurance coverage.
  • Once selected for employment, federal regulations require that the applicant must either undergo a federal background check as part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program or already possess a TWIC. The TWIC must be obtained within 30 days of appointment and be maintained for the duration of employment. For further program information, visit: https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
