Job summary

University of California, Berkeley's BioData/OSPO initiative is hiring for an Open Source Research Software Engineer: Product (0652) to help build BioJupyter and related data-science tools. You will work with cross-disciplinary researchers to shape reusable frontend components, data-sharing features, and AI-assisted research workflows.

The role emphasizes collaboration, open science, and integrating cutting-edge tools across Jupyter and biomedical research contexts.

Qualifications

• Advanced programming skills with Python, and experience building complex software.
• Strong visual and interaction design craft for technical software.
• Experience creating collaborative workflows enabling reproducible research.
• Experience in open source communities and contributing via issues/PRs.
• Experience in biomedical research context is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Apply advanced software and product design concepts to plan, design, develop, modify, debug, deploy, and evaluate highly complex software and infrastructure in interdisciplinary research collaborations.
• Work with domain scientists to identify friction in research workflows, focusing on multi-modal data integration and sharing; conduct user research and usability testing; translate findings into software requirements.
• Analyze existing open source software or design interaction patterns for multi-modal data analysis and collaboration; establish reusable frontend components and visual language.
• Prepare and approve user and developer documentation; set technical requirements for software specs; communicate with interdisciplinary experts.
• Contribute to the maintenance and sustainability of multiple projects within the open source ecosystem; include reviewing code and CI tasks.
• Develop project plans as part of interdisciplinary teams; deliver tasks and report progress.
• Serve as technical lead for one or two software projects; provide regular updates to teams.
• Advance open source practices through trainings and mentorship within UC Berkeley OSPO network.
