Job summary

University of California, Berkeley is seeking OS-RSEs to advance the BioJupyter platform within the Jupyter ecosystem. You will contribute to data-rich, AI-powered biomedical research tools and collaborate across open source communities and interdisciplinary teams.

The role emphasizes software development for agentic AI, open science, and reproducible research, with a focus on security and scalable deployment across environments.

Qualifications

• Advanced programming skills, including Python expertise.
• Demonstrated fluency using agentic AI and large language model (LLM) coding agents for software engineering.
• Experience building software, tooling, or infrastructure for agentic AI / LLM systems.
• Demonstrated software development and maintenance skills: version control with git, testing, continuous integration and/or continuous deployment with GitHub Actions or similar.
• Experience participating in multi-stakeholder open source communities: distributed decision making, etc.
• Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Applies advanced software concepts to plan, design, develop, modify, debug, deploy, and evaluate highly complex interfaces, software, and/or infrastructure solutions.
• Contributes to and supports maintenance of 1-4 projects within the open source ecosystem.
• Develops project plans within interdisciplinary teams and delivers tasks on time.
• Analyses existing open source software and devises algorithms for new modular systems.
• Enables collaborators to design, implement, reproduce, and extend data analyses and access data from multi-modal pipelines.
• Stays up to date on research and software engineering standards, including agentic AI basics and security practices.
• Prepares and approves or obtains approval for user and developer documentation.
• Serves as technical lead for one or two software development projects.
• Advances the UC Berkeley Open Source Program Office by delivering trainings and mentorship.
