Job summary

The University of California, Berkeley seeks an OS-RSE to advance the BioJupyter platform within the UC Berkeley Open Source Program Office. You will contribute to open source research software, collaborate with domain scientists, and help integrate AI agents and data sharing across Jupyter deployments.

You will work on interdisciplinary teams, shape software requirements, review code, and mentor contributors while aligning with Berkeley's principles and strategic plan.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Python and advanced programming techniques.
  • Strong design craft for complex software with reusable components.
  • Experience building collaborative workflows for reproducible research.
  • Git, testing, CI/CD, and GitHub Actions experience.
  • Experience in multi-stakeholder open source communities.
  • Experience reviewing code via GitHub issues/PRs.
  • Experience in biomedical research in academia or industry.
  • Ability to navigate uncertainty and deliver from interdisciplinary teams.
  • Software specification and deployment for large-scale systems.
  • Ability to leverage open source libraries for research software.
  • Strong communication across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Self-motivation and teamwork with deadlines.
  • Demonstrated complex problem-solving skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Applies advanced software and product design concepts to plan, design, develop, modify, debug, deploy, and evaluate complex software in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Works with domain scientists to identify friction in research workflows and translates findings into software requirements.
  • Analyzes and designs reusable frontend components and visual language for workflows.
  • Prepares and maintains user and developer documentation; communicates technical requirements across teams.
  • Maintains and supports 1-4 projects within the open source ecosystem; contributes features and reviews code.
  • Develops project plans and delivers allocated tasks within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Seeks leadership for software development projects and mentors contributors.
  • Advances open source practices and participates in community activities.
