Position Summary
The Building Information Modeler is responsible for developing, maintaining, and coordinating accurate 3D building information models that support VEC’s electrical, mechanical/process piping, fabrication, and construction operations.
This position works closely with project managers, project engineers, field leadership, fabrication personnel, customers, general contractors, engineers, and other trade partners to translate design documents and field information into coordinated, constructible models.
The ideal candidate has 2–5 years of BIM/VDC experience, preferably in electrical, mechanical, industrial, or specialty contracting, and understands that the purpose of BIM at VEC is not simply to produce a model. It is to help the project team identify conflicts before installation, improve planning, support fabrication, reduce field rework, and execute work safely and efficiently.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
BIM Modeling & Coordination
- Develop accurate 3D models from engineering drawings, specifications, sketches, point-cloud/field information, and project requirements.
- Model VEC-installed systems at the level of detail required for construction coordination and fabrication.
- Maintain models throughout the project lifecycle to reflect approved design changes and field conditions.
- Participate in multidisciplinary BIM coordination with general contractors, engineers, customers, and other trade contractors.
- Perform clash detection and identify spatial conflicts, access concerns, installation constraints, and potential constructability issues before work reaches the field.
- Incorporate approved coordination changes into VEC models and construction documentation.
- Assist with development and maintenance of record/as-built models.
Construction & Field Support
- Work directly with project and field teams to ensure models reflect practical installation requirements.
- Translate coordinated models into useful information for field installation and fabrication.
- Develop coordinated drawings, layouts, sections, details, and other construction documentation as required.
- Assist teams in evaluating equipment access, routing, elevations, clearances, installation sequencing, and trade interfaces.
- Coordinate field changes with project teams so models remain current and reliable.
- Support prefabrication efforts by providing accurate model information and drawings.
- Participate in project coordination meetings and communicate outstanding BIM issues clearly.
- Help resolve model-related questions from project and field personnel.
Quality & Project Execution
- Maintain accuracy and consistency of model geometry, equipment, components, elevations, and other project information.
- Follow VEC, customer, project, and BIM execution-plan standards.
- Complete assigned modeling and coordination activities in accordance with project schedules and milestones.
- Maintain organized project files and model documentation.
- Communicate coordination issues early when they could affect fabrication, schedule, cost, quality, safety, or field productivity.
- Participate in model reviews and constructability discussions.
- Continuously improve BIM workflows, standards, templates, and modeling practices based on lessons learned.
Minimum Qualifications
- 2–5 years of BIM, VDC, CAD, detailing, or construction modeling experience.
- Associate degree or technical training in Building Information Modeling, CAD, engineering technology, construction technology, drafting, or related field preferred. Equivalent relevant construction/BIM experience may be considered.
- Working proficiency with Autodesk Revit and Navisworks.
- Experience interpreting construction drawings, specifications, details, and engineering documents.
- Understanding of 3D coordination and clash-detection processes.
- Ability to visualize construction assemblies and systems in three dimensions.
- Strong attention to dimensional accuracy and detail.
- Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet project deadlines.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work with both technical and field-based personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with an electrical, mechanical, process piping, industrial, or specialty contractor.
- Experience modeling electrical systems, conduit, cable tray, equipment, supports, mechanical piping, or similar construction systems.
- Experience supporting fabrication or prefabrication.
- Experience working directly with superintendents, foremen, project managers, or field crews.
- Familiarity with BIM Execution Plans and project-specific modeling standards.
- Experience coordinating models involving multiple building trades.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and other Autodesk construction applications.
- Experience developing fabrication-ready or installation-level drawings is a plus.
- Exposure to laser scanning/point-cloud workflows is a plus.
Core Competencies
Successful candidates should demonstrate:
- Construction Mindset: Understands that the model must work in the field.
- Attention to Detail: Produces accurate and dependable models and drawings.
- Constructability Awareness: Recognizes conflicts and installation challenges before they become field problems.
- Collaboration: Works effectively with project management, field operations, fabrication, engineering, customers, and other trades.
- Problem Solving: Evaluates alternatives rather than simply identifying clashes.
- Communication: Clearly communicates modeling assumptions, conflicts, changes, and outstanding decisions.
- Accountability: Takes ownership of assigned models, drawings, coordination items, and deadlines.
- Continuous Improvement: Looks for practical ways to improve modeling, coordination, and construction workflows.
This position primarily performs computer-based BIM and coordination work but requires an understanding of active construction environments. The employee may periodically visit jobsites, fabrication facilities, customer facilities, or other VEC locations to verify conditions, participate in coordination, or support project teams.
When visiting project sites, the employee must comply with applicable VEC, customer, and project safety requirements.
Success in This Role
A strong Building Information Modeler at VEC will help the project team:
- Find conflicts before they reach the field.
- Produce models that reflect how VEC intends to build the work.
- Improve communication between engineering, project management, fabrication, and field operations.
- Increase opportunities for prefabrication.
- Maintain accurate construction and as-built model information.
- Give field crews clearer, more reliable information for installation.
