We are partnering with an established and growing mechanical contracting organization to hire a VDC / BIM Manager to lead its Virtual Design and Construction department. The company specializes in mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and process piping systems across commercial, industrial, healthcare, hospitality, and institutional construction projects throughout the Upper Midwest. This is an opportunity for an experienced VDC professional to take ownership of an established team's technical standards, project coordination, modeling output, and continued development. The organization is also making significant investments in its prefabrication capabilities, creating an opportunity for this individual to help shape how engineering design, BIM coordination, shop fabrication, and field installation work together. We're looking for someone who brings both strong technical expertise and proven leadership ability—someone who understands the details of mechanical and plumbing construction, can lead a team of VDC professionals, and enjoys building efficient, repeatable processes.
As the VDC / BIM Manager, you'll lead the team responsible for producing coordinated, fabrication-ready mechanical and plumbing models across multiple construction projects. You'll oversee the department's technical standards, modeling workflows, software platforms, staffing priorities, and quality-control processes while working closely with Engineering, Project Management, fabrication teams, and field leadership. You'll also serve as a key technical resource in MEP coordination meetings, helping resolve complex design and installation challenges before they reach the field. This is a highly visible leadership role with the opportunity to influence how an established mechanical contractor continues to expand and modernize its VDC and prefabrication operations.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of VDC Technicians and BIM professionals
- Assign and balance modeling and coordination workloads across multiple active projects
- Establish department priorities in collaboration with Project Managers and engineering leadership
- Provide technical guidance, training, coaching, and performance feedback
- Help determine future staffing, software, and process improvement needs
- Establish measurable performance expectations and promote accountability across the team
BIM Standards & Technical Management
- Own and continuously improve the organization's VDC/BIM standards and workflows
- Manage Revit project templates, Autodesk Fabrication databases, content libraries, shared parameters, and naming conventions
- Establish and maintain modeling standards, LOD requirements, and QA/QC processes
- Oversee LOD 400 mechanical and plumbing modeling using Autodesk Fabrication for Revit
- Ensure accurate production of shop drawings, spool drawings, sleeve layouts, hanger details, and Bills of Materials
- Maintain consistency and quality across multiple project teams and deliverables
MEP Coordination & Construction Support
- Lead MEP coordination meetings with owners, architects, engineers, general contractors, and other trades
- Oversee clash detection and issue resolution using Navisworks and Revizto
- Coordinate mechanical and plumbing models with architectural, structural, electrical, and other building systems
- Work with Project Managers to resolve constructability and coordination challenges
- Support RFIs, change orders, and construction-phase technical issues
- Visit active construction sites for field surveys, quality checks, and coordination with installation crews
Prefabrication & Model-to-Shop Workflows
- Partner with fabrication and field teams to ensure models translate efficiently into shop production and installation
- Oversee spooling and fabrication deliverables using tools such as eVolve and Stratus
- Identify opportunities to increase prefabrication and reduce field labor, waste, and rework
- Coordinate with engineering teams to transition design-build models into fabrication-ready deliverables
- Improve communication and data flow between Engineering, VDC, the prefab shop, and field operations
- Help develop scalable VDC processes as the company's prefabrication capacity expands
Technology, Process & Continuous Improvement
- Manage and evaluate the department's VDC technology platforms, including Revit, Autodesk Fabrication, Navisworks, Revizto, and Autodesk Construction Cloud
- Oversee software upgrades, content libraries, and technical workflows
- Support laser scanning, point cloud modeling, and existing-condition documentation
- Track project and department metrics, including modeling hours, coordination progress, clash resolution, and fabrication rework
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and collaboration across the construction process
- Help establish the long‑term technical direction of the VDC department
Qualifications
- 7+ years of VDC, BIM, or MEP modeling experience within mechanical, plumbing, sheet metal construction, or MEP engineering
- 2+ years of experience leading projects, coordinators, or a VDC team
- Advanced proficiency with Autodesk Fabrication for Revit and Navisworks
- Demonstrated experience producing or overseeing LOD 400 mechanical and plumbing models
- Strong understanding of clash detection and multidisciplinary MEP coordination
- Working knowledge of Autodesk Fabrication databases and content management
- Experience developing, implementing, or enforcing BIM/VDC standards and quality‑control processes
- Ability to interpret and critically evaluate mechanical and plumbing drawings and specifications
- Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and competing deadlines
- Willingness to visit active construction sites and fabrication operations
- An associate's degree in CAD/Drafting, Mechanical Design, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred, although equivalent hands‑on experience will be considered.
