Job summary

Memphis-Shelby County Schools is seeking a bilingual ESL interpreter/paraeducator to support students, families, and staff. The role focuses on interpreting, tutoring non-English-speaking students, and translating district documents to ensure clear communication across school communities.

The position also involves facilitating cultural acclimation, assisting with classroom activities, and performing routine clerical tasks to support daily operations.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or two years of college (minimum 48 semester hours) may be acceptable.
• Passing score on the ParaPro Assessment Test, or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience.
• Relevant training and experience in translating and/or mentoring; experience working with students in an instructional environment, preferably bilingual.

Responsibilities

• Provides oral and written interpretation between the school, teachers, parents and students.
• Provides academic tutoring and assistance for non-English-speaking students to help them understand and speak fluent English.
• Teaches customs of American society to those from other countries and cultures.
• Translates district/school documents to other languages as qualified.
• Chaperones on field trips to facilitate communication with ESL students.
• Monitors students on school grounds to enforce rules and regulations.
• Responds to inquiries, concerns and complaints regarding issues, programs, policies and procedures.
• Participates in meetings with teachers, principals and administrators.
• Documents all contact with and services provided to students.
• Attends training and workshops to enhance job knowledge and skills.
• Performs routine clerical tasks including reports, correspondence, filing, answering phones, emails, data entry.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
