Job summary

Hospice of Marion, part of Empath Health, is seeking a Bereavement & Children's Program Counselor to provide individual, family, and group grief counseling across children, teens, adults, and families. You will conduct intakes, assess risks, and develop care plans while promoting outreach and partnerships to grow pediatric bereavement services.

The role involves representing Empath Grief Care at events and supporting education programs to ensure accessibility to high‑quality grief resources;

Qualifications

• Master of Social Work degree preferred or related clinical counseling field.
• Licensure or license eligibility within 90 days of hire.

Hospice of Marion, a part of Empath Health is seeking a Bereavement & Children's Program Counselor. The Bereavement & Children's Program Counselor provides comprehensive bereavement counseling, support, education, and crisis intervention services to children, teens, adults, and families. This role serves as a key clinical resource for both adult and pediatric grief support programming, delivering individual, family, and group counseling services while helping to expand awareness, participation, and community engagement in the children's bereavement program.

In addition to direct clinical care, this position is responsible for developing community partnerships, conducting outreach and educational presentations, supporting volunteer facilitators, and implementing strategies to increase referrals and participation in children's grief support services. The counselor serves as an ambassador for Empath Grief Care and works collaboratively to ensure bereaved children and families have access to high‑quality grief support resources.

What You’ll Do

• Provide individual, family, and group grief counseling to children, teens, adults, and families.
• Conduct comprehensive intake assessments to determine service eligibility, treatment needs, and group readiness.
• Perform risk assessments related to complicated grief, trauma, suicide risk, abuse, neglect, and other psychosocial concerns.
• Develop and maintain individualized plans of care, goals, interventions, and progress documentation.
• Represent Empath Grief Care at community events, health fairs, educational programs, and networking opportunities.
• Identify opportunities to expand children's bereavement services throughout the service area.

What You’ll Need

• Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited program preferred; or Master's degree in:
  • Mental Health Counseling
  • Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Child Life
  • Other related clinical counseling field
• Licensure OR License Eligible (Registered Intern): Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Registered Clinical Social Work Intern (RCSWI), or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern (RMHCI), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern (RMHCI), or Certified Child Life Specialist
• Applicants must obtain appropriate licensure or registration within 90 days of hire if not already licensed.
• Minimum two years of counseling experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families.
• Experience with bereavement, trauma‑informed care, crisis intervention, and family systems preferred.
• Community outreach, program development, or referral relationship‑building experience preferred.
• For field‑based positions, employees must have reliable transportation which will enable them to perform tasks and responsibilities in a timely and appropriate fashion. Must provide proof of valid automobile insurance, a copy of which will be placed in the employee’s HR file.
