Job summary

NYC Department of Social Services seeks an Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialist I to supervise BOS staff, oversee the eligibility and benefits processes, and guide case planning for participants. The role includes directing application intake, interviews, and assessments to determine eligibility for Food Assistance, SNAP, Medicaid, and other supports.

You will also generate reports, ensure compliance with City and State regulations, and coordinate interventions to promote self-sufficiency.

Qualifications

• Requires four-year high school diploma or equivalent plus three years of related social/human services experience.
• Bachelor’s degree with 18 months of relevant experience as Benefits Opportunity Specialist or similar work.

Responsibilities

• Supervise BOS staff who handle the entire application process for new applicants and related cases.
• Assign applications, review recommendations and sign off on benefits and case entries.
• Supervise interviews to assess eligibility for immediate needs grants and public assistance.
• Prepare daily/weekly statistics and monthly audits.
• Provide case consultations on difficult cases and guidance in case planning.
• Oversee ongoing eligibility determination and employability planning for participants.
• Review employment eligibility decisions for correctness per NY rules and regulations.
• Conduct mandatory dispute resolution when required.
• Supervise staff assisting homebound clients and walk-ins via center contact.
• Coordinate housing need assessments for tenants at risk of homelessness and anti-eviction planning.
