Job summary

The HRA/Department of Social Services in New York City seeks an Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialist I to supervise a BOS team, oversee eligibility determinations, and drive employment planning and case management to help families achieve self-sufficiency.

You will coordinate intake, reviews, and referrals, ensuring accurate processing of applications and timely reporting. The role emphasizes leadership, compliance, and collaboration across FIA/BAC teams.

Qualifications

• Four-year high school diploma or equivalent with 3 years of full-time social/human services experience including client services or employment planning/counseling.
• Bachelor’s degree plus 18 months of full-time experience as Benefits Opportunity Specialist or as described in (1).
• 60 semester credits substituted for 9 months of work experience, with at least 18 months of full-time related experience as Benefits Opportunity Specialist or social/human services work.

Responsibilities

• Supervise BOS staff who handle the entire application process for new applicants and related cases.
• Assign applications, review recommendations, and sign off on benefits and case entries.
• Supervise interviews to assess eligibility for immediate needs grants and public assistance.
• Prepare daily/weekly statistics and monthly audits.
• Provide case consultation and guidance on difficult cases as needed.
• Oversee ongoing eligibility assessments and employment/ housing plan development.
• Review eligibility decisions for accuracy per agency and NYS rules; conduct conferences.
