Job summary

NYC Department of Social Services is seeking an Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialist I to supervise BOS staff and oversee eligibility determinations for families in need. Qualifications

• A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and three years of full-time experience in social/human services or a related setting.
• Experience providing client services or employment planning/counseling which involves job development.
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; plus eighteen months of full-time satisfactory experience as a Benefits Opportunity Specialist.
• College credit from an accredited college may be substituted for this experience (60 semester credits for 9 months).
• All candidates must have at least 18 months of full-time experience as a Benefits Opportunity Specialist or related social/human services work.
• This position is open to qualified persons with a disability under the 55-a Program.

Responsibilities

• Supervise BOS staff who handle the entire application process for new applicants and closed cases.
• Assign applications to staff, review recommendations, and approve benefits and case entries.
• Supervise staff who interview applicants and assess eligibility for immediate needs grants, SNAP, Medicaid, and employment assistance.
• Prepare daily/weekly statistical reports and conduct monthly audits.
• Provide case consultation and guidance on difficult cases in case planning.
• Supervise ongoing eligibility management and employment plan development to promote self-sufficiency.
• Review employment eligibility decisions for accuracy per Agency and NYS rules.
• May conduct field visits and supervise housing needs assessments for tenants at risk of homelessness.
