The Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 20 hours per week and receive up to 24 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 9 for fall, 9 for spring and 6 for summer.

Overview

The Criminal Justice Department is requesting a graduate assistant for the 2025-2026 academic year. Typically, we look for an advanced student that has an interest in either pursuing a Ph.D. or a career in a field in which the experience of being a graduate assistant will give them a greater chance at success. We have found that when we invest in students, other institutions are more likely to then invest in them as well.

Description of Duties

• Assistance in planning, running, and attending major events hosted by the CJ department. The student offers support for these events, and in addition the student is able to meet, network, and gain knowledge from each event. Events include:
• Criminal Justice Career/internship Fair: This event is held every spring but requires much preparation. There is a component of career development along with community partners who attend and man tables to give information on their agencies. The GA is instrumental in forging partnerships throughout the fall and early spring semester to arrange participation with community agencies. Also, the GA will attend a dinner event with participants and faculty. This allows out GA to have an opportunity to get network with each of these individuals separate from the career fair.
• Criminal Justice Advisory Board Meeting: Daylong meeting with community partners including local non-profits, state representatives, the DA, law enforcement, DOC administration, and others.
• Departmental Conferences: The department hosts an in-house mini-conference almost every year.
• Assist with small research projects, such as finding literature and data entry
• Example-a past GA worked with a faculty member to input survey data into SPSS.
• Example-a past GA was asked to attend a lecture of a visiting scholar and take notes and then search for recommended literature from that lecture.
• Serve in a teaching assistant role (limited to):
• Copy and scan book chapters
• Search for articles
• Develop a content area presentation
• Develop quiz questions
• Search for documentary videos
• Assist with small departmental office tasks, including the development of program materials.
• Assist with the organization of advising during our 3-week open advising hours.
• Assist with other projects as needed in the department
  
  

The Graduate chair is exploring the possibility of integrating generative AI into the MS in CJ curriculum. The GA will assist with gathering information about similar academic innovations and testing different AI platforms.
