Title AY25-26 Graduate Assistant - Drone Technology Complete Streets Grant

Position Description

The Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 20 hours per week and receive up to 24 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 9 for fall, 9 for spring and 6 for summer.

Overview and Duties
The position is for a graduate student to work with the GeoGraphics Laboratory co-directors and researchers in the technology demonstration project that uses drone-based geospatial analytics to monitor “Complete Streets/Transit Streets” This includes assisting in the following projects:

  • Pilot programs that demonstrate safety benefits of drone-based technologies not yet adopted in the community but are commercially available and are at an advanced technological readiness. Providing real-time download of the drone-based aerial imagery to Old Colony Planning Commission transportation planning staff, BSU Facilities Management, and BSU Police Department (PD) over the secure BSU Internet network.
  • Conduct “survey grade” drone-based autonomous mapping.
  • Create hyper-lapse high resolution drone-based video and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide geospatial analytics of paths of travel “designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders of all ages and abilities.”
  • Design an autonomous “Drone-in-a-Box/perch and stare” monitoring capability.
  • Setting up a BSU SS4A project database including raw imagery and video, 2D orthophoto mosaics, 3D digital models, and training materials available
  • Develop training materials for pre-apprenticeships and presentations.
Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this Graduate Assistantship position will possess:

  • A strong academic background in computer science/geography/aviation or a related field.
  • Experience with data analysis, familiarity in drone-based technologies and geospatial analytics, and artificial intelligence tools.
  • Strong written communication skills for content creation and professional correspondence.
  • An interest in marketing, advertising, and student engagement.
