Job summary

RTX is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for onsite work in Huntsville, AL. You will lead architecture and development of core software components and libraries for avionics platforms, delivering DO-178 artifacts and steering certification activities.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, interact with customers and regulators, and drive safety-critical software across the full lifecycle. Proficiency in C++ and DO-178 experience are essential.

Qualifications

• Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and 10+ years of experience, or an advanced degree with 7+ years of experience.
• Experience designing and developing software architecture, libraries, or platform-level components in aerospace or safety-critical environments.
• Experience leading technical execution of projects with customer engagement and senior stakeholder presentations.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture and design of core software components, libraries, and tooling for avionics systems.
• Drive technical direction for safety-critical software (DO-178) across development and verification activities.
• Define and manage software requirements, decomposition, and traceability across complex systems.
• Develop and verify software using modern C++ and OO design principles; own DO-178 certification artifacts (DAL-A).
• Lead and support certification efforts, including engagement with customers and regulators.
• Conduct peer reviews to ensure quality and compliance across the lifecycle.
• Collaborate with engineering, program leadership, and customers to align solutions with program objectives.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (<10%).
