Caterpillar Inc. is seeking an Autonomy Development Engineer II to create production-quality software for autonomy and automation on heavy equipment.

This role focuses on feature ownership across the full software lifecycle and collaboration with cross-functional teams to advance autonomy technologies into production environments. Ideal candidates will have strong C/C++ skills, experience with ROS, and a background in embedded, real-time systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS, Engineering, or related field.
• Experience with C/C++ and real-time embedded systems.
• Knowledge of ROS and autonomy domains.
• Onsite work in Mossville, IL or Irving, TX.

Responsibilities

• Develop production-quality C/C++ software for autonomy and automation systems.
• Own feature or subsystem development across the full software lifecycle (design, implementation, validation, release).
• Contribute to requirements definition, architecture discussions, and technical trade-offs.
• Troubleshoot and resolve moderately complex software and system issues.
• Support verification, validation, and functional safety activities.
• Collaborate with software, systems, hardware, and validation teams.
• Communicate technical approaches, risks, and status to stakeholders.
• Provide peer support and informal mentorship to junior engineers.
