Job summary

The Jewish Community Center of San Francisco is seeking an Athletics Gym Coordinator to support day-to-day operations of youth sport classes and leagues. The role collaborates with Athletics program management on planning, scheduling, and delivering high-quality curriculum while ensuring safety and excellent customer service to families.

You will oversee coaches, assist with practice hours, set up and tear down, coach at least one team per season, and handle event coverage and communications.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children ages 3-13.
  • Experience in athletics, specifically basketball and/or volleyball.
  • Energetic, outgoing personality with teamwork and coordination skills.
  • Flexible schedule including mornings, evenings and weekends.
  • CPR & First Aid certification preferred or ability to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Assist management with directing JCCSF coaches.
  • Be present during practice hours and transitions.
  • Maintain a consistent presence at all program events.
  • Communicate with coaches and implement high quality curriculum.
  • Develop and check weekly lesson plans with coaches.
  • Oversee day-to-day Athletics operations in the absence of management.
  • Keep storage neat and organized.
  • Provide a safe environment for participants, coaches and families.
  • Assist in managing large groups of children and develop sport and life skills.
  • Set up and tear down class sections and equipment; guide coaches on assistance.
  • Coach at least one team per season; fill in as needed.
  • Provide excellent customer service to participants and families.
  • Explain the Athletics department’s Redefine The Score model.

The Athletics Gym Coordinator helps to facilitate the day-to-day operation of all Athletics Department programing, specifically youth sport classes and leagues. The Gym Coordinator works closely with Athletics program management on planning, analysis, high customer service standards and coordination of daily departmental operations. This is a highly visible position and is a point of contact for any parent(s) or patrons that have questions, need clarification or any general knowledge about athletic programs, including program philosophy, goals, methods, schedules, instructors/coaches, or any other relevant information.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Direct Program Support
    • Program Oversight
      • Assist management with providing direction to JCCSF coaches.
      • Be present during practice hours and transitions.
      • Maintain a consistent presence at all program events (weekend games, practices, etc.) to ensure effective oversight.
      • Maintain consistent and effective communication with all coaches, enforcing expectations set by management and providing clear information/ direction in order to implement high quality curriculum.
      • Help develop and be familiar with lesson plans each week and check in with coaches to ensure practice objectives are met.
      • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Athletics department in the absence of Athletics management.
      • Ensure storage remains neat and organized.
      • Ensure a positive and safe environment for all program participants, coaches, and families.
      • Assist in managing large groups of children and facilitate development of sport and life skills.
      • Set up & take down class sections and equipment. Direct coaches/instructors on ways they can assist with set-up/tear-down.
      • Coach at least one team per season in all sports.
      • Coach teams as needed when regular coaches are absent.
  • Customer Service
    • Provide excellent customer service to program participants and families.
    • Maintain a working knowledge of all program areas and the ability to communicate program information to all stakeholders, including clients and staff.
    • Be knowledgeable and proficient in explaining the philosophy, curriculum, and operations of the Athletics department’s \"Redefine The Score” model.
  • General
    • Provide input to management regarding Athletics department’s coaches and instructors in support of performance evaluations.
    • Support in coverage plans when athletics coaches are absent or missing.
    • Additional duties as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience working with children ages 3-13 years. Working knowledge of child development is a plus.
  • Previous experience working in an athletics background, specifically with basketball and/or volleyball programs.
  • Energetic and outgoing personality, ability to work as part of a team and effectively engage and coordinate with various stakeholders (both staff and clients).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that varies based on the sports season, and which includes morning, evening, and weekend hours. Must be committed to being available on weekends with hours that will vary based on each week’s game schedule.
  • Current CPR & First Aid certification preferred, or ability to obtain upon hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions include work hours onsite in the gymnasium of a large community center. Work duties include frequent contact with families and children, other community members, and staff members.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Walking and visually observing gymnasium on a daily basis. Carry out functions of coaches and instructors when scheduled and on an as needed basis. Lift and carry equipment and other items of weights up to 50 lbs.

HOURS

12 – 18 hours/week

SCHEDULE

This is a school-year position (September – May). Evening hours and
occasional weekend hours required. Weekend hours vary based on game
schedule and the sports season. Due to the nature of the team sports
schedules, we cannot guarantee two consecutive days off each week. If
interested, summer employment is available through other JCCSF
departments.
