Job summary

Sonoma State University in California seeks a Director of Development for Athletics to lead fundraising efforts and cultivate major gift prospects for the Intercollegiate Athletics Program. The role reports to senior leadership and aligns with SSU priorities to advance academic achievement through athletics.

The ideal candidate will build a robust portfolio, supervise fundraising activities, and collaborate with campus partners to expand donor engagement and support for Seawolf Athletics.

Qualifications

• minimum of four years of experience in successful relationship building with prospects, volunteers, and board members
• demonstrated aptitude to be successful in face‑to‑face fundraising, including 4 years of progressively responsible and applicable management and/or supervisory experience
• Bachelor’s degree required
• proven track record of successfully working with individual donors, soliciting and securing gifts and experience in designing and implementing successful fundraising strategies
• experience in athletic fundraising within a university environment and a strong understanding of university culture and corporate partnerships highly preferred

Responsibilities

• identifying, qualifying, cultivating and soliciting potential donors for the Athletics Program
• organizing and providing effective communication with donors and potential donors
• stewarding alumni and other individual prospects, sponsors and major donors
• coordinating gift processing
• recruiting, training and motivating volunteers for the university
• other fundraising projects
