Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Kansas City seeks an Assistant Distribution Engineer to support project teams designing distribution systems from concept through completion for 2.4 kV to 34.5 kV overhead and underground lines.

You will prepare voltage packages, perform calculations, and assist with field inspections and data gathering under supervision of a PE. Entry-level role with growth toward licensure; travel around 25%.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in Engineering or related field required.
• FE exam completed if Engineering Technology degree is used.
• ABET-accredited program strongly preferred.
• Prior internship or related consulting experience preferred.
• Basic knowledge of electrical distribution power flow preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office; basic distribution design software experience preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and teamwork.
• EIT certification preferred.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
• Campus or community involvement preferred.
• Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the design of distribution projects from conceptual phase through design completion.
• Assist in preparing voltage packages for overhead and underground projects.
• Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, BOMs, and other deliverables.
• Perform distribution calculations (cable pulling, voltage drop, pole loading).
• Apply basic knowledge of NESC standards and utility procedures.
• Assist with field inspections for overhead and underground facilities.
• Assist with data collection for project managers.
• Assist with vegetation management, ROW, and outage planning communications.
• Assist with client presentations, reports, and visuals to show results and status.
• Other duties as assigned.
