Job summary

UMBC’s Retriever Integrated Health (RIH) Counseling Services seeks an Associate Director for Clinical Services to lead clinical operations, maintain direct care, and supervise staff. This senior role advances equity-centered, evidence-based practice and supports strategic planning and accreditation readiness.

Responsibilities include managing day-to-day service delivery, implementing quality improvements, and partnering on hiring as the team grows while maintaining a strong clinical caseload.

Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in clinical mental health field from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of two years post-licensure clinical experience, with at least one in a college/university counseling setting.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision to licensed or pre-licensed staff.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record systems and clinical documentation standards.
  • Knowledge of clinical ethics, crisis intervention, and mental health regulations.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and health equity.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and written/verbal communication skills.

Department:

Retriever Integrated Health (RIH) is UMBC's integrated model for student health and well-being, bringing medical care, counseling, and health promotion together under the Center for Well-Being. Counseling Services, housed within RIH and part of the Division of Student Affairs, provides confidential mental health care to UMBC students, including individual and group therapy, crisis response, consultation, and outreach designed to support students across the full range of their academic and personal lives. https://health.umbc.edu/counseling-services/counseling/

Position Overview:

The Associate Director for Clinical Services is a senior leadership position within RIH Counseling Services, serving as the primary lead for clinical service delivery, quality of care, and clinical operations across the center. In addition to carrying a direct caseload, the role supervises assigned clinical staff, advances equity-centered and evidence-based practice, and contributes to strategic planning, accreditation readiness, and the integrated-care mission of Retriever Integrated Health.

Responsibilities:

As Associate Director for Clinical Services, you'll lead the clinical heart of the counseling center while staying grounded in direct care. You'll carry an active caseload, providing individual therapy, crisis assessment and intervention, and short-term and single-session work, and you'll serve as a senior clinical resource for complex and high-risk cases.

You'll also own the systems that make good clinical care possible at scale. You'll oversee day-to-day service delivery, caseload distribution, and clinical throughput; manage intake and stepped-care pathways; and lead quality improvement efforts including peer review, documentation compliance, and accreditation readiness. You'll provide administrative supervision to a team of staff counselors and the Wellbeing Coordinator, offering performance feedback, professional development, and case consultation, and you'll partner on hiring and onboarding as the team grows.

As a member of the leadership team, you'll help shape clinical policy and strategy, coordinate interdisciplinary care with RIH medical and psychiatric providers, and step in to lead the center in the Director's absence. This is a role for an experienced clinician-leader who wants real operational authority alongside meaningful patient contact.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Terminal degree in clinical mental health field (counseling, social work, or psychology) from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of post-licensure clinical experience, at least one of which in a college or university counseling setting.
  • Demonstrated experience providing clinical supervision to licensed or pre-licensed mental health staff.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record systems (e.g., Point and Click) and clinical documentation standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of clinical ethics, crisis intervention, and mental health regulations.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, cultural humility, and health equity.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited program with completion of an APA-accredited doctoral internship.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of post-licensure clinical experience, with at least two (2) years in a university counseling or integrated healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership, program development, or administrative supervision in a mental health setting.
  • Experience with quality improvement, program evaluation, or data-driven clinical systems.
  • Experience working with doctoral trainees, interns, or practicum students in a clinical training environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive care with historically underserved and underrepresented populations.

Salary:

Salary: $100,000 -$113,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
