Job description

Assistant Superintendent – Urbandale, IA

Build Something That Lasts. Including Your Career. At Boyd Jones, our Assistant Superintendents are developing field leaders who help turn the project plan into safe, coordinated, high‑quality work in the field. We are looking for someone who takes ownership, communicates clearly, follows through on commitments, and wants to grow into greater field leadership responsibility. You will work alongside experienced Superintendents, project teams, and trade partners while progressively taking ownership of project areas, scopes, and daily field operations.

What You’ll Be Accountable For
  • Leading Safety in the Field. Support daily safety planning, pre‑task discussions, field observations, and corrective‑action follow‑through. Reinforce safe work practices with trade partners and help maintain a clean, organized, and professional job site.
  • Supporting Planning and Schedule Execution. Help develop and maintain short‑term look‑ahead plans that reflect actual field conditions. Coordinate manpower, materials, equipment, access, inspections, and work sequencing so crews are prepared and commitments are met.
  • Coordinating Daily Field Operations. Maintain a visible presence in the field. Conduct regular field walks, support daily huddles and subcontractor coordination meetings, answer questions, identify constraints, and communicate developing issues before they affect safety, quality, or schedule.
  • Maintaining Quality and Preventing Rework. Verify installations against drawings, specifications, approved submittals, and Boyd Jones standards. Support pre‑installation planning, QA/QC inspections, punch‑list completion, and clean project turnover.
  • Connecting the Field and Project Team. Review RFIs, submittals, drawing revisions, and other project information for field impacts. Work closely with the Superintendent, Project Manager, and Project Engineer to ensure decisions, changes, and commitments are clearly communicated and documented.
  • Developing as a Field Leader. Take increasing ownership of assigned areas or scopes, build technical knowledge across trades, strengthen leadership skills, and contribute ideas that improve planning, workflow, communication, and project execution.
Qualifications
  • Three or more years of commercial construction, skilled‑trade, field coordination, or supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience as a carpenter, laborer, operator, foreman, or other field leader strongly valued
  • Working knowledge of commercial construction means, methods, sequencing, and jobsite coordination
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, schedules, and technical information
  • Confidence communicating with trade partners, project teams, inspectors, and other stakeholders
  • Strong organization, follow‑through, judgment, and willingness to address issues directly
  • Experience with digital plans, tablets, construction applications, and Procore preferred
  • A commitment to working safely and continuously developing as a construction leader
What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation aligned with experience and responsibility
  • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, retirement, and paid‑time‑off benefits
  • A defined development path toward Superintendent responsibility
  • Coaching and hands‑on experience with accomplished field and project leaders
  • Opportunities to contribute to meaningful commercial construction projects
  • A values‑driven culture built around safety, accountability, partnership, development, and responsible stewardship
Our Values
  • Safety. We are committed to ensuring the well‑being of our team members, partners, and communities by maintaining the highest standards of safety.
  • Integrity. We do what we say we are going to do and make the right decisions.
  • Partnership. We develop genuine relationships built on trust, respect, and collaboration.
  • Continuous Improvement. We relentlessly pursue excellence in everything we do.
  • Stewardship. We responsibly manage the resources of our company, our clients, and the environment.
