Job Summary

As an assistant store manager (ASM), you enjoy working with people, are energized by your passion for books, and model excellent service every day. As the deputy to the store manager (SM), you focus on the look and consistent presentation of our stores, empowered to make decisions ensuring the shopping experience for our customers is to their satisfaction. You communicate consistently with your SM on your ideas to ensure this experience and drive this through our people, actively participating in bookseller development. In your role, you ensure sales and profit through your ability to leverage resources, resulting in booksellers who can provide first-class service to our customers. As a leader, you work collaboratively with the team to ensure a store where booksellers are engaged doing what they love: talking about and selling books.

Responsibilities
  1. Ensure consistent, friendly, and informed service to customers by setting an example and training the team.
  2. Create a vibrant bookstore through flawless execution of store basics.
  3. Assess the store from the customer’s perspective and use insights to seek and influence improvements with the SM.
  4. Model handselling skills to drive campaigns like Our Monthly Picks and preorders, establishing book prowess and increasing sales.
  5. Develop the bookselling team through engagement, coaching, and providing feedback for individual growth.
  6. Achieve sales goals and ensure operational excellence to maximize efficiency and minimize loss.
  7. Ensure compliance with safety, customer service, and operational standards.
  8. Communicate respectfully and urgently with the team on key issues, fostering a positive culture.
  9. Collaborate within the cluster structure for the betterment of all locations.
  10. Perform physical activities on the selling floor, including standing, bending, lifting, and climbing.
  11. Open and close the store, ensuring safety for employees and customers.
Knowledge & Experience
  1. Solid bookselling knowledge across genres and understanding of the book industry.
  2. Enthusiasm for books reflected in high standards of community service.
  3. Experience managing and developing employees at all levels.
