Job summary

DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (FEMS) is seeking an Assistant Medical Director to provide medical direction and oversee EMS quality assurance, training, and education programs. The role reports to the Medical Director and leads efforts in EMS policy, performance measurement, and ongoing clinical improvements.

The incumbent will supervise staff, collaborate with department leadership, and participate in major incident response, with priority given to DC residents.

Qualifications

• Must have an allopathic or osteopathic medical degree (M.D., D.O.).
• Must have a valid Medical License and be eligible to be licensed in DC without restriction.
• Board certification in a medical specialty such as emergency medicine, preferably ABEM.
• Possess a valid DEA license in good standing.

Responsibilities

• Participates with the Medical Director in developing guidelines to monitor and optimize EMS quality.
• Provides EMS training and education programs at the Department's Training Academy and other sites.
• Manages and supervises subordinate managers, supervisors and staff.
• Researches and develops EMS protocols and education related to those protocols.
• Collaborates on specifications for ambulance vehicles, equipment, and supplies.
• Assists with design and implementation of management information systems for operations and quality assurance.
• Participates in major incident response alongside FEMS leadership.
• Reviews serious medical quality issues and forwards for higher review as needed.
