The Walters Art Museum is seeking an Assistant Manager of Retail Operations to elevate the visitor experience through exceptional service and strategic merchandising. You will oversee purchasing, POS, and inventory, while driving sales and maintaining alignment with the museum’s values and standards.

Candidate must have a bachelor’s degree or 5 years of related retail management experience, strong leadership, and cash-management skills.

  • Recruit, train and supervise a knowledgeable sales team; coach performance.
  • Ensure safety, loss prevention and cash handling procedures are followed.
  • Collaborate across teams on merchandise selection and displays.
  • Support Museum Café operations as needed and achieve ServSafe Manager certification.

The museum offers challenging and creative work opportunities by promoting collaboration and teamwork.OVERVIEW OF ROLEThe Assistant Manager of Retail Operations supports the visitor experience through excellent customer service and thoughtful retail selections that complement the collection and exhibitions at the Walters Art Museum. This position also contributes financially to the Institution’s mission-driven operations through attaining sales goals and professional store management.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESOversee the purchasing, customer service, point-of-sale system, inventory control, and reporting.Maintain the retail operation in a manner consistent with The Walters Art Museum’s values, with a customer service focus, and in alignment with visual and merchandising standards.Create and maintain new and existing vendor relationshipsDrive sales by prioritizing positive customer experience, strategic store operations, and effective merchandising.Collaborate across teams to purchase merchandise, design creative displays and implement strategic sales campaigns based on exhibitions, programming, and need.Track store sales, communicate sales expectations to staff regularly, and coach staff based on individual sales performance.Model, coach and teach retail operations team to deliver exemplary customer service and uphold The Walters’ merchandising and operational standards.Ensure compliance with all guidelines involved with safety, loss prevention, inventory control and cash handling procedures.Recruit, train, and oversee a knowledgeable and motivated sales team.Serve as a resource of Museum Café operations and proceduresSupport Café staff and daily procedures as neededAchieve and maintain ServSafe Manager certification.All other duties as assigned.A bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university and 1 year of related retail management experience, or 5 years of related retail management experience.Diverse experience in all aspects of retail store management.Demonstrated excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.Proven leadership skills by building trust, credibility and partnership with supervisors and direct reports.Demonstrated ability to effectively build, motivate, and supervise a diverse staff.High competency with cash management, inventory management, merchandising, and Point of Sale cash register systems.Experience interpreting, analyzing, and utilizing retail sales data and metrics.Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the organization verbally and in written communication.Ability to conduct oneself with integrity, discretion, and maintain confidentiality when appropriate.Organized and detail-oriented with superb time management skills.Effective problem solving, critical thinking and multi-tasking experience are essential.Demonstrated ability to prioritize and work under tight deadlines, manage multiple projects at once, and respond to changing and new projects and priorities with confidence.Demonstrated ability to remain flexible in a dynamic and fast-moving, agile organization.Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite. Experience using Counterpoint a plus.SCHEDULED SHIFTWednesday – Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Thursday: 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Saturday – Sunday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.Schedule may change as needed to support museum events.ANNUAL SALARY: $50,000 - $55,000The Walters Art Museum provides an excellent comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, prescription, vision, subsidized transportation and parking, museum membership, short term disability, FSA (flexible spending account), 457b retirement, and free professional financial management counseling.This is a 100% onsite position. All employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. The museum does not sponsor work visas.
