Job summary

The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, MD is seeking a part-time School Communities Educator to coordinate and teach collections-based art and arts-integrated lessons for PreK-12 students, onsite and online.

The Educator will work closely with the Manager of School Communities within the LECE department to ensure positive experiences for school groups, whether guided or self-guided, while promoting diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion across programs.

Qualifications

HS or GED diploma required; AA/BA in education or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

Develop and teach inclusive PreK-12 lessons connected to the Walters collections onsite, online, and offsite.
Collaborate with PreK-12 teachers and LECE teams to coordinate guided and self-guided school visits; manage logistics and admin duties.
Liaise with school groups onsite and act as primary contact to Visitor Experience and Security for day-of challenges.
Coordinate college readiness and career development opportunities for PreK-12 students.
Support outreach and promotion of School Communities programs.
Participate in staff meetings and program development within the School Communities unit and LECE department.
Distribute flyers offsite and via email communication to promote LECE programs.
Attend trainings to deepen knowledge of Walters exhibitions, museum education, and pedagogy.
Other duties as assigned.

OVERVIEW OF ROLE

The School Communities Educator is a part time role primarily responsible for coordinating and teaching collections-based art and arts-integrated lessons to PreK-12 students, especially single-visit programs onsite and online, with the aim of advancing arts and arts-integrated learning throughout Baltimore City and the state of Maryland. The School Communities Educator works closely with the Manager of School Communities to ensure a positive experience for school groups who visit the museum both in a guided and self-guided capacity.

The Educator will report directly to the Manager of School Communities. As an educator in the Learning, Experience, and Community Engagement (LECE) department, the Educator plans, administers, and teaches in programs across the department. LECE strives to increase curiosity, agency, and well-being in our community through creative and thought-provoking experiences. LECE’s work is grounded in the museum’s commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop, coordinate, and teach inclusive and inquiry-based PreK-12 lessons that connect to the Walters’ collections and exhibitions onsite, online, and offsite.
Collaborate with PreK-12 teachers and Visitor Experience and LECE teams to coordinate guided and self-guided school group visits, including troubleshooting logistical challenges, and administrative duties as assigned related to school groups.
Liaise with school groups onsite and serve as the first point of contact to Visitor Experience and Security teams for day-of challenges and logistics.
Coordinate college readiness and career development opportunities for PreK-12 students.
Support outreach and promotion of School Communities programs.
Actively contribute to the work of the School Communities unit and LECE department as a whole. This includes, but is not limited to, staffing all departmental large-scale events, attending meetings, participating in program development and reflection, and organizing supplies.
Support LECE’s outreach and promotion, such as by distributing flyers offsite and through email communication.
Participate in trainings and other professional development opportunities to deepen knowledge about the Walters’ exhibitions and collections, museum education, gallery teaching pedagogy, audience engagement, lesson planning, inclusive an

Qualifications

HS or GED diploma required. AA or BA in education, art history, or studio art preferred.
At least 1 year of experience teaching youth in informal or formal educational settings.
Bilingual in Spanish and English strongly preferred.
At least 1 year of coursework or professional experience in art history, art education, or museum education preferred.
Excellent customer service skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and public speaking skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with students and adults of diverse ages and backgrounds.
Excellent organizational and administrative skills.Working knowledge of Google Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and digital communication platforms such as Zoom and Google Meet.
Demonstrated interest in art and working with youth.
Knowledge of PreK-12 developmental stages, arts education, and or local and national education standards preferred.
Experience planning and executing events preferred.
Availability for a Monday through Friday workweek and weekends as needed.

SCHEDULED SHIFT

Regular work week is Monday to Friday, with some weekends as needed.
