Job description

Our gourmet store located in Port Washington is seeking a FT Assistant Kitchen Manager for its busy Department! This individual will assist with the supervision of kitchen staff and their duties and functions by managing the pantry, inventory, controlling how food is stored and prepared and supervising how the customers are serviced.

A successful Assistant Kitchen Manager in our gourmet grocery kitchens has hands-on expertise preparing gourmet dishes from scratch and has the ability to supervise and guide staff to deliver quality, timely food and ensure that all customers are satisfied.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure that all food items and products are stored, prepared and served based on the kitchen's recipe, preparation and portion standards.
  • Prepare dishes according to Uncle Giuseppe's company and store recipes.
  • Assist with all hiring, training, scheduling, and all other kitchen administrative functions.
  • Order kitchen materials and ingredients based on the store menu.
  • Supervise food preparation in the kitchen and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain a clean working environment and ensure compliance with safety and company policies.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels and conduct daily and weekly inventories.
  • Work with various department managers to create menu items, pricing, and establish portion sizes for meals and special events.
  • Schedule shifts by business hours, days, and occasions.
  • Oversee the training of employees for the safe operation of kitchen equipment and proper handling of heavy items.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • HS Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in a restaurant/BOH environment with knowledge of food safety rules and standards.
  • In-depth experience preparing various food dishes, focusing on Italian cuisine.
  • Excellent understanding of back of the house administrative duties in a busy kitchen.
  • Prior experience in teaching and mentoring kitchen employees.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
  • Outstanding communication and supervisory skills.
  • High motivation with the ability to think quickly on the job.

Working Conditions
  • Most of the time is spent moving about continuously on hard surfaces, with frequent positioning to examine merchandise, including bending, climbing, crawling, handling, pulling, reaching, and stooping.
  • May require lifting objects up to 30 pounds and moving heavy or awkward objects over 30 pounds with assistance.
  • Usually in a comfortable indoor environment surrounded by moving machinery and/or loud equipment that may require shouting to be heard.
  • Potential exposure to temperature extremes from freezers, ovens, and/or coolers.
  • Occasional exposure to cleaning agents.
