Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Assistant Fire Protection Engineer in Morristown, NJ to assist with multi-discipline design, fire suppression, alarm, and smoke management systems. You will contribute to hydraulic analyses, life-safety evaluations, and coordination with field teams across diverse client projects.

The role emphasizes documentation, design support, and participation in budgets and safety compliance.

Qualifications

Bachelor Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related field required.
ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
Basic knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Basic knowledge of building codes, NFPA standards and refinery/industrial guidelines a plus.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem‑solving environment.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

Assist in the design, specification, and multi‑discipline coordination of fire protection systems (wet/dry/deluge/foam) and fire alarms.
Assist in performing hydraulic calculations and other fire protection analyses.
Assist in evaluating life safety, occupancy, egress, and smoke management requirements.
Assist in construction administration: review shop drawings, field inspections, and testing.
Assist in site evaluations and documenting existing systems.
Assist in preparing project budgets and estimates.
Comply with safety policies and standards.
Pursue campus/community involvement; maintain eligibility to work in the U.S.
