Position Overview
This role is for an EC Teacher Assistant who will serve as a physical needs assistant.
Basic Function
Assists teachers by working with Exceptional Children (EC) to achieve the goals of the student(s)' Individual Education Program(s) (IEPs) and provide access to general education as appropriate.
Essential Functions
- Assist in instructing individual EC students or groups across all curricular areas as directed by the teacher.
- Collect data to monitor student progress on IEP goals.
- Collaborate with teachers to develop instructional strategies.
- Manage materials, adapted equipment, and technology devices for classroom and individual use.
- Supervise during emergency drills, assemblies, specials, field trips, and other school functions.
- Act as a bus monitor when specified by the IEP team.
- Report any issues or important information about students to the teacher.
- Participate in professional development and in-service training.
- Assist with checking materials, correcting papers, supervising, and testing as directed.
- Maintain current bulletin boards and learning centers.
- Support school routines and transitions.
- Assist with attendance, record keeping, and ordering supplies.
- Provide physical assistance to students in self-help, clothing, toileting, and feeding as needed.
- Support therapists and teachers with occupational and physical therapy duties.
- Assist students with writing, note-taking, and responses under teacher supervision.
- Help lift, position, assist with walking, and push wheelchairs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of regulations related to exceptional children.
- Ability to use current technology and communication devices relevant to disabilities.
- Effective communication skills in oral and written formats.
- Knowledge of classroom management and differentiation techniques.
- Familiarity with the IEP process.
- Research-based instructional and behavior management techniques.
- Ability to comply with guidelines and deliver curriculum appropriately.
- Problem-solving skills and proactive/reactive response ability.
- Capability to provide personal and medical assistance, emotional support, or other care.
- Skills in monitoring student performance using various data collection methods.
- Ability to teach others how to use technology or equipment.
Education and Experience
- Completion of an Associate's Degree, two years of higher education (48 credit hours), or equivalent through assessment or training programs.
- Associate's Degree with a concentration in Education is preferred.
- One year of experience working with EC children is preferred.
