Assistant, Exceptional Child - PNA (25-26)

Basic Function

Personal Needs Assistant (PNA) assists teachers by working with Exceptional Children (EC) to help achieve the goals outlined in the students' Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and to provide access to general education as appropriate.

Essential Functions
  1. Assist in instructing individual or groups of EC students across all curricular areas as directed by the teacher.
  2. Collect data to document student progress on IEP goals.
  3. Plan and collaborate with teachers on instructional strategies.
  4. Assist with setup, use, and management of materials, adapted equipment, and technology devices for classroom and individual use.
  5. Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, specials (e.g., PE, art, recess), field trips, and other school functions on and off campus.
  6. Act as a bus monitor when specified by the IEP team for students with special needs.
  7. Notify teachers of any issues or important information regarding students.
  8. Participate in in-service training for professional development.
  9. Assist with checking materials, correcting papers, supervising, and testing as directed.
  10. Help maintain current bulletin boards and learning centers.
  11. Assist with school routines and transitions.
  12. Support attendance procedures, record keeping, ordering materials, and other assigned duties.
  13. Provide physical assistance to students in areas such as self-help, clothing, toileting (including accidents and catheterization), and feeding.
  14. Assist therapists and teachers with occupational and physical therapy duties and mainstreaming classes.
  15. Provide physical support to students by helping with writing, note-taking, and responses under teacher supervision.
  16. Assist students with mobility, including lifting, positioning, walking, and wheelchair pushing.
  17. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of regulations related to exceptional children.
  • Ability to use current technologies and communication methods relevant to disabilities, including high-tech and low-tech devices.
  • Effective communication skills in oral and written formats.
  • Knowledge of classroom management and differentiation techniques.
  • Understanding of the IEP process.
  • Ability to apply research-based instructional and behavior management techniques.
  • Compliance with guidelines and ability to adapt curriculum as needed.
  • Problem-solving skills and awareness of whom to inform about issues.
  • Ability to provide personal care, medical, emotional support to students.
  • Skill in monitoring student performance through various data collection methods.
  • Ability to teach others to operate technology or equipment.
Education and Experience
  • Completion of an Associate's Degree or two years of higher education (at least 48 credit hours), or passing a formal assessment (Workkeys and 96 hours of in-service training), or completion of relevant apprenticeship or professional development plans.
  • Associate's Degree with a focus on Education is preferred.
  • One year of experience working with EC children is preferred.
