Job Overview

This position involves assisting teachers in supporting Exceptional Children (EC) to meet their Individual Education Program (IEP) goals and ensuring access to general education as appropriate.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in instructing individual or groups of EC students across all curricular areas as directed by the teacher.
  • Collect data to monitor and document student progress on IEP goals.
  • Collaborate with teachers to develop instructional strategies.
  • Manage materials, adapted equipment, and technology devices for classroom and individual use.
  • Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, specials, field trips, and other school activities.
  • Act as a bus monitor when specified by the IEP team.
  • Report any issues or important information regarding students to the teacher.
  • Participate in professional development and in-service training programs.
  • Assist with checking materials, correcting papers, supervising tests, and maintaining learning centers.
  • Support school routines, attendance procedures, and record keeping.
  • Provide physical assistance to students with self-help, toileting, feeding, and mobility needs, including support during therapy sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of laws and regulations related to exceptional children.
  • Ability to operate current communication and assistive technology devices.
  • Effective communication skills in both oral and written formats.
  • Knowledge of classroom management, differentiation, and IEP processes.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to respond proactively and reactively.
  • Capability to provide personal and medical assistance to students as needed.
Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree or equivalent education (48 credit hours), or successful completion of assessment and training requirements.
  • Preferred: Degree with a concentration in Education.
  • Experience working with EC children is a plus.
