Basic Function
Assists teachers by working with Exceptional Children (EC) to achieve the goals of the student(s)' Individual Education Program(s) (IEPs) and provide access to general education as appropriate.
Essential Functions
- Assists in the instruction of individual EC students or groups of EC students in all curricular areas as directed by the teacher.
- Collects data to document individual student progress on IEP goals.
- Plans and works with teachers in devising instructional strategies.
- Assists with setup, use, and management of materials, adapted equipment, and/or technology devices for classroom and individual students.
- Supervises during emergency drills, assemblies, specials (e.g., PE, art, recess), field trips, and other school functions on and off campus.
- Acts as a bus monitor when EC students' needs are identified by the IEP team.
- Alerts teachers to any problems or special information about students.
- Participates in in-service training for professional growth.
- Assists in checking materials, correcting papers, supervising, and testing as directed by the teacher.
- Helps keep bulletin boards and learning centers current.
- Assists with school routines, transitions, attendance procedures, record keeping, and ordering materials.
- Provides physical assistance to students in self-help, clothing, toileting, feeding, and mobility as needed.
- Supports therapists and teachers with occupational and physical therapy duties.
- Helps students with writing, note-taking, and responses under teacher supervision.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Knowledge of regulations related to exceptional children.
- Ability to use current technology and communication devices relevant to disabilities.
- Effective communication skills in oral and written formats.
- Knowledge of classroom management, differentiation, and IEP processes.
- Ability to implement research-based instruction and behavior management techniques.
- Ability to provide personal and medical assistance, emotional support, and monitor performance using data collection methods.
- Proficiency in teaching others to use technology or equipment.
Education and Experience
- Completion of an Associate's Degree or two years of higher education (48 credit hours), or passing a formal assessment, or completion of specific training programs.
- Associate's Degree with a concentration in Education preferred.
- One year of experience working with EC children preferred.
