Job summary

Ambient seeks an experienced Assistant Controller to join our finance team in California. This role will manage financial operations, ensure GAAP compliance, and support the Controller in maintaining the organization’s financial health in a fast-paced environment.

You will oversee accounting operations, budgeting, forecasting, and audits while leading a team and driving process improvements across job costing and WIP reporting for construction projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• CPA license strongly preferred.
• 5+ years progressive accounting experience with at least 2 years in supervision.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, accounting standards, and financial reporting.
• Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems (QuickBooks, NetSuite, MS Dynamics).
• Advanced Excel skills with pivot tables and complex formulas.
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
• Construction industry experience, including WIP reporting and job costing.
• Familiarity with tax compliance and regulatory filings.
• Knowledge of FP&A and process improvement or automation initiatives.

Responsibilities

About the role:

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our finance team. The Assistant Controller will play a vital role in managing the company’s financial operations, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and supporting the Controller in overseeing the financial health of the organization. This role requires strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of accounting principles, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Experience in the construction industry is a strong plus.

Key Responsibilities

• Financial Reporting: Assist in preparing accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and analyses for internal and external stakeholders.
• Accounting Operations: Oversee daily accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance.
• Budgeting and Forecasting: Collaborate with the finance team to develop budgets, monitor variances, and provide detailed forecasts.
• Compliance: Ensure adherence to GAAP, company policies, and regulatory requirements. Support audits by providing documentation and addressing inquiries.
• Internal Controls: Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining effective internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure data accuracy.
• Reconciliations: Perform and review monthly account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Job Costing: Support job costing processes by ensuring accurate allocation of costs to projects, tracking project profitability, and % of completion.
• Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance and training to support their professional growth.
• Process Improvement: Identify opportunities for process enhancements and automation to improve efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
• Support Controller: Provide strategic and operational support to the Controller and senior management as needed.

• Proven track record of implementing process improvements or automation initiatives.

Pay Range: $125,000 -$135,000/year or depending on experience
