Job summary

Gilder Search Group is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller (Accounting Manager) to lead the accounting operations in Grass Valley, CA on-site. You will own monthly, quarterly, and year-end closes, prepare journal entries, and ensure the integrity of the general ledger while partnering with operations to validate costs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience (construction or project-based accounting preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of accrual-based accounting.
  • Experience with month-end close, general ledger, and financial reporting.
  • Experience with ERP systems (Acumatica, NetSuite, Sage, or similar).
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Own and execute monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes for assigned entities.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, including accruals, amortizations, and adjustments.
  • Maintain integrity of the general ledger and ensure accurate transactional flow.
  • Perform detailed account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Support construction-style accounting processes, including job costing and WIP schedules.
  • Support accurate inventory accounting and validate project costs, margins, and financial accuracy.
  • Prepare monthly Financial Reporting Packages (FRP) including P&L, balance sheets, and variance analysis.
  • Analyze financial results and communicate insights to leadership; support budgeting and forecasting.
  • Assist AP/AR functions and resolve escalated issues; liaise between accounting, operations, and leadership.
  • Utilize ERP systems to manage and improve accounting processes; drive process improvements.

Assistant Controller (Accounting Manager)

Location: Grass Valley, CA (Onsite)

Salary Range: $75,000 – $90,000

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to support the accounting operations of our companies. This role is based on site in Grass Valley, CA and is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who thrives in a hands‑on environment and takes full ownership of their responsibilities.

This is a high-impact role requiring an independent thinker who can identify issues, develop solutions, and execute without constant direction. The Assistant Controller will lead key accounting processes, oversee transactional support staff, and deliver accurate, timely financial reporting to senior leadership. Strong communication and the ability to collaborate across departments are critical to success.

Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Close
  • Own and execute monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes for assigned entities
  • Prepare and review journal entries, including accruals, amortizations, and adjustments
  • Maintain integrity of the general ledger and ensure accurate transactional flow
  • Perform detailed account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner
Construction & Inventory Accounting
  • Support construction-style accounting processes, including job costing and WIP schedules
  • Support accurate inventory accounting
  • Partner with operations to validate project costs, margins, and financial accuracy
Financial Reporting & Analysis
  • Prepare monthly Financial Reporting Packages (FRP), including:
    • Profit & Loss statements
    • Balance Sheets
    • Variance analysis with clear, actionable commentary
  • Analyze financial results, identify trends, and communicate insights to leadership
  • Support budgeting and forecasting processes as needed
Leadership & Process Ownership
  • Support Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions, including performing transactional tasks in these functions
  • Take a hands‑on approach to resolving escalated issues within AP/AR (billing discrepancies, collections challenges, vendor issues, etc.)
  • Act as a key liaison between corporate accounting, operations, and senior leadership
Systems & Process Improvement
  • Utilize ERP systems (Acumatica, NetSuite, Sage, or similar) to manage and improve accounting processes
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
  • Leverage moderate-to-advanced Excel capabilities to support reporting and analysis
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with project managers, operations teams, and leadership to ensure accurate financial data
  • Communicate proactively regarding issues, risks, and opportunities
  • Build strong relationships across departments to support business objectives
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience (construction, construction‑adjacent or project‑based accounting preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of accrual‑based accounting
  • Experience with month‑end close, general ledger management, and financial reporting
  • Experience working in ERP systems (Acumatica, NetSuite, Sage, or similar)
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines
Preferred
  • Experience with job costing, WIP schedules, and construction accounting workflows
  • Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, or financial planning & analysis
  • Moderate‑to‑advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel preferred (e.g., XLOOKUP, nested formulas, data analysis)
