Job summary

KBW Financial Staffing & Recruiting is seeking an Assistant Controller in Waltham, MA to join the Finance & Accounting team. This newly created role offers close collaboration with the Controller and hands-on responsibility across the accounting function.

The ideal candidate has 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, a strong month-end close, GAAP knowledge, and proficiency with Excel and ERP systems. The position features onsite work 4 days after training and a discretionary bonus plan.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with strong hands-on month-end close and general ledger experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Experience supervising, reviewing, or coordinating the work of accounting professionals.
• Strong understanding of GAAP, account reconciliations, financial reporting, and internal controls.
• Advanced Excel skills with the ability to build effective schedules, reconciliations, and reporting tools.
• Strong ERP experience and the ability to quickly learn new systems.
• A process-improvement mindset with the ability to identify opportunities for greater efficiency and consistency.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, roll forwards, and variance analysis.
• Maintain the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger and review accounting activity for proper coding, classification, and timely resolution.
• Review and oversee accounting activity related to accounts payable, billing, and other operational areas.
• Review the work of accounting team members and provide guidance to ensure accuracy and adherence to deadlines.
• Improve accounting processes, close procedures, reconciliations, documentation, and internal controls.
• Develop and enhance Excel-based reporting, schedules, and tools to improve efficiency and reduce manual work.
• Support financial statement preparation, management reporting, audits, and ERP-related initiatives.
• Help identify opportunities for automation, improved reporting, and greater consistency across accounting processes.
