KBW Financial in Waltham, MA seeks an Assistant Controller to join a growing Finance & Accounting team. This newly created role offers hands-on responsibilities across the accounting function and close collaboration with the Controller.

The ideal candidate has 7+ years of accounting experience, strong month-end close and GL expertise, and a track record in process improvement and team supervision.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with month-end close and general ledger expertise.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Experience supervising accounting professionals.
• Strong GAAP knowledge, financial reporting, and internal controls.
• Advanced Excel skills for schedules, reconciliations, and reporting.
• ERP experience and ability to learn new systems quickly.
• Process-improvement mindset to drive efficiency and consistency.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities.
• Maintain accuracy of the general ledger and ensure proper coding and timely resolution.
• Oversee accounts payable, billing, and other operational accounting activities.
• Review work of team members and provide guidance to meet deadlines.
• Improve close procedures, reconciliations, documentation, and internal controls.
• Develop Excel-based reporting, schedules, and tools to increase efficiency.
• Support financial statement prep, management reporting, audits, and ERP initiatives.
• Identify opportunities for automation and more consistent accounting processes.

Assistant Controller

Location: Waltham, MA

Schedule: 4 days onsite after training

Compensation: $140-160k+ discretionary bonus

About the Opportunity

A well-established organization is looking to add an Assistant Controller to its Finance & Accounting team. This is a newly created role offering the opportunity to work closely with the Controller while taking a hands-on role across the accounting function.

The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys being involved in the details, has strong month-end close and general ledger experience, and can identify opportunities to improve processes without disrupting a well-established organization.

What You’ll Do

• Lead and support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, roll forwards, and variance analysis.
• Maintain the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger and review accounting activity for proper coding, classification, and timely resolution.
• Review and oversee accounting activity related to accounts payable, billing, and other operational areas.
• Review the work of accounting team members and provide guidance to ensure accuracy and adherence to deadlines.
• Improve accounting processes, close procedures, reconciliations, documentation, and internal controls.
• Develop and enhance Excel-based reporting, schedules, and tools to improve efficiency and reduce manual work.
• Support financial statement preparation, management reporting, audits, and ERP-related initiatives.
• Help identify opportunities for automation, improved reporting, and greater consistency across accounting processes.

What You Bring

• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with strong hands-on month-end close and general ledger experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Experience supervising, reviewing, or coordinating the work of accounting professionals.
• Strong understanding of GAAP, account reconciliations, financial reporting, and internal controls.
• Advanced Excel skills with the ability to build effective schedules, reconciliations, and reporting tools.
• Strong ERP experience and the ability to quickly learn new systems.
• A process-improvement mindset with the ability to identify opportunities for greater efficiency and consistency.
