Work Deliverables Summary

The Assistant Controller serves as a management resource of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas with accountability for supervising or performing the day-to-day operations of the general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, revenue, and expense areas. The role involves maintaining internal control safeguards and reporting systems to ensure compliance with standards and regulations. Knowledge of GAAP, Uniform Administrative Requirements for Federal Awards, and developing reports for management, committees, and the Board is essential.

This role requires a commitment to continuous improvement, implementing systems, policies, and processes that enhance the Finance department’s services. The Assistant Controller will lead in strengthening internal communications and financial literacy across the organization, fostering a positive work environment. The candidate must work well in high transaction volume environments, be organized, technically proficient, and demonstrate integrity, risk assessment skills, and problem-solving abilities.

Essential Role Functions: (Accountabilities / Responsibilities)
  • 15%: Manage payroll processes, including review, audits, and reconciliation.
  • 30%: Oversee month-end close, transaction activities, and maintain accounting records, including reconciliations.
  • 25%: Assist in training and managing staff to meet departmental objectives.
  • 5%: Prepare and publish financial statements in accordance with GAAP for non-profits.
  • 10%: Facilitate quarterly designation payout processes.
  • 5%: Lead or participate in special projects and assume department responsibilities in the absence of the Controller.
  • 5%: Provide customer service to other departments and donors.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Educational/Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
  • 5+ years in progressively responsible accounting roles, non-profit experience preferred.
  • Ability to work in the office 2-3 days per week.
Critical Skills / Experience Needed:
  • Excellent analytical skills and report creation.
  • Ability to provide financial insights and recommendations.
  • Focus on internal controls.
  • Experience with consolidations and intercompany eliminations.
  • Knowledge of GAAP accounting.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks under deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Pro, and other software.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Self-motivated with integrity and confidentiality.
  • Commitment to excellence, continuous learning, and the mission of United Way.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in staff management and development.
  • CPA or CPA-eligible preferred.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct.
  • Grants management experience.
  • At least 2 years in nonprofit accounting and supervisory roles.
