Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Chicago is seeking an Assistant Civil Engineer to support our roadway engineering team on a wide range of infrastructure projects for DOTs, counties, toll authorities, and Design-Build initiatives. The role focuses on learning through hands-on design tasks, coordinating with project teams, and contributing to safe, efficient engineering solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field; ABET accreditation preferred.
• Internship or related consulting experience preferred.
• Basic knowledge of civil engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
• Basic knowledge of transportation design standards (AASHTO) preferred.
• Proficiency with transportation software: MicroStation, InRoads, Geopak, OpenRoads preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office.
• Attention to detail, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
• Engineers in Training (EIT) certification preferred.
• GPA 3.0+ strongly preferred.
• Campus or community involvement preferred.
• Candiates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

• Assist in civil design from conceptual phase through design completion.
• Contribute to roadway design, including horizontal/vertical alignments, typical sections, drainage and hydraulics.
• Research and compile project-related data for project managers.
• Prepare studies and reports.
• Assist with client presentations, shop drawings, and contract administration for transportation facilities.
• Support field inspections, measurements, and calculations for clients.
• Perform other duties as assigned and comply with policies.
