Job summary

UMBC Athletics is seeking an Assistant Athletic Trainer to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care to student-athletes and help prevent, evaluate, treat, rehab, and return-to-sport injuries. You will work with team physicians, athletic trainers, sports performance professionals, and other health care team members to support student-athlete health and performance.

Position Overview:

Join the UMBC Sports Medicine team and make a meaningful impact on the health, well-being, and performance of our student-athletes. The Assistant Athletic Trainer will provide comprehensive, patient-centered health care to assigned UMBC athletic teams while working collaboratively with team physicians, athletic trainers, sports performance professionals, and other members of our multidisciplinary health care team. This position plays an integral role in injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, emergency care, and return-to-sport while developing strong relationships with student-athletes and supporting their overall health and well-being. The successful candidate will join a collaborative Sports Medicine and Sports Performance department that values professional growth, communication, innovation, and providing an exceptional student-athlete experience.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide primary athletic training coverage for assigned intercollegiate athletic teams, including practices, competitions, conditioning sessions, and team travel as required.
  • Evaluate and manage athletic injuries, illnesses, and other medical conditions within the athletic trainer’s scope of practice and in accordance with Maryland licensure requirements.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-sport programs for injured student-athletes.
  • Provide emergency medical care, including recognition and management of potentially life-threatening conditions, and assist with implementation and rehearsal of Emergency Action Plans.
  • Implement evidence-informed injury and illness prevention strategies to promote student-athlete health, safety, availability, and performance.
  • Coordinate appropriate physician and specialist referrals, diagnostic testing, follow-up care, and communication with members of the student-athlete’s health care team.
  • Collaborate closely with team physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, sports performance staff, and other health care professionals to provide integrated and patient-centered care.
  • Coordinate pre-participation medical requirements and physical examinations and ensure student-athletes meet appropriate medical requirements prior to participation.
  • Make and communicate appropriate participation, restriction, and return-to-sport recommendations in collaboration with the designated medical team.
  • Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical records, including injury evaluations, treatment documentation, rehabilitation progress, physician referrals, and other required health information.
  • Assist with medical insurance processes, injury claims, and coordination of medical services as assigned.
  • Educate student-athletes regarding injury prevention, rehabilitation, recovery, nutrition, mental health and wellness resources, and other health-related topics within the athletic trainer’s scope of practice.
  • Develop professional, trusting relationships with student-athletes while maintaining appropriate medical confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Communicate effectively with coaches and Athletics personnel regarding student-athlete participation and availability while maintaining appropriate medical privacy and confidentiality.
  • Participate in Sports Medicine staff meetings, continuing education, departmental initiatives, and other activities supporting the health, safety, and well-being of UMBC student-athletes.
  • Maintain all required professional certifications, state licensure, CPR/AED credentials, and continuing education requirements.
  • Perform other duties related to the operation and advancement of the UMBC Sports Medicine program as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Athletic Training or Sports Medicine from a CAATE accredited institution.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certified.
  • Eligible for Maryland Licensure.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • One year of athletic training experience is preferred. This may include experience in a Graduate Assistant or Graduate Intern collegiate position.

Salary:

Salary: $52,000 - $59,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
