Central Steel & Wire, part of the Ryerson Family of Companies, seeks an Area Lead to oversee the warehouse team and support the third-shift supervisor. The role focuses on production goals and staff development within a dynamic metals environment.

The position is a second shift (Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00 pm–6:30 am) with a starting hourly rate in the stated compensation range. Candidates will contribute to safety, training, and operational efficiency while advancing within the organization.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of experience in a relevant role.
• Experience operating equipment and ability to recognize materials in the service center.
• Possesses leadership abilities and has strong interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a rapidly changing environment.
• Demonstrated willingness to learn SAP; prior SAP experience is not required.
• Physical ability to pass vision, hearing, and mobility requirements.

Responsibilities

• Operate motorized material handling equipment (overhead crane, side loader, forklift).
• Fill in when short-handed or during high demand.
• Train staff to ensure task proficiency and provide coaching.
• Lead pre-shift safety and production huddles.
• Ensure corrective actions to eliminate hazards.
• Respond to machinery breakdowns by directing repairs or re-assigning personnel as needed.
• Possibly cover management absences as requested.
• Other duties as assigned or as changes occur.

As an Area Lead with Central Steel & Wire, you will oversee the warehouse team and assist the third-shift supervisor with production and department goals.

This position is a second shift. The hours for this position are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 pm to 6:30 am.

Roles and Responsibilities

• The ideal candidate will operate motorized material handling equipment such as an overhead crane, side loader, and forklift.
• It is also a requirement that when short-handed or during periods of high demand, leadership is responsible for filling in where needed.
• Responsible for training staff to ensure they are fully trained for the tasks they are performing; coaches, mentors, counsels, and develops them.
• Effectively leads pre-shift safety and production huddles with the team.
• Ensures corrective actions are carried out to eliminate workplace hazards.
• Reacts to machinery breakdowns by directing repairs when possible, arranging for outside repairs or re-assignment of personnel as needed.
• Assumes short-term responsibility for management absences as requested.

Requirements

• Successfully pass a skills-based assessment—evaluates reading, math, inspections & measurement, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
• 3–5 years of experience.
• Experience operating equipment and ability to recognize materials in the service center.
• Possesses leadership abilities and has a desire to advance with solid interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a rapidly changing environment.
• Flexible, dependable, and solutions-oriented.
• The successful candidate is expected to develop proficiency in SAP as part of their role. Prior experience is not required, but a demonstrated ability and willingness to learn and become proficient in SAP is essential.
• Physical ability to pass physical requirements exam for vision, hearing, and mobility.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $29.09 – $30.40 per hour. A starting rate higher than $29.09 per hour is based on a level of experience and education that significantly exceeds the minimum requirements and is commensurate with the compensation scale.
