Job summary

Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) is seeking an Area Engineer for the ITS Unit to manage construction, inspection, operation, maintenance, and emergency response for ITS infrastructure at MDTA facilities, including the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

The role reports to the Deputy Director of Construction and guides project engineers, inspectors, and contractors to ensure contract compliance and reliable system integration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
• Eight (8) years of experience in professional engineering, including one (1) year of supervisory or consultant management experience.

Responsibilities

• Review proposed and active construction projects for constructability, progress, quality, and compliance with contract requirements, documenting findings and recommendations.
• Prepare extra work justifications, responses to RFIs, written directives, and other contract administration documentation.
• Coordinate and oversee emergency repairs and restoration of ITS to minimize operational disruptions.
• Plan, schedule, and conduct pre-construction, progress, and project coordination meetings with contractors, consultants, utility companies, stakeholders, and government agencies to facilitate project delivery and resolve issues.
• Resolve construction and contract disputes by arbitrating disagreements between project engineers and contractors.
• Provide technical documentation, supporting evidence, and testimony during contract negotiations, dispute resolution, and claims proceedings.
