Job summary

The Maryland Department of Transportation seeks an ITS Area Engineer to supervise and oversee construction, inspection, operation, maintenance, and emergency response for ITS infrastructure at MDTA facilities, including the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

You will monitor project progress, support system reliability, and ensure rapid response to system failures in a 24/7 environment, reporting to the Deputy Director of Construction.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
• Experience: Eight (8) years in professional engineering, including one (1) year of supervisory/consultant management.
• Substitution rules: Master's may replace one year of non‑supervisory experience; PE licensure meets education requirements.

Responsibilities

• Review proposed and active construction projects for constructability, progress, quality, and contract compliance.
• Prepare extra work justifications, responses to RFIs, and other contract docs.
• Coordinate emergency repairs and restorations to minimize disruptions.
• Plan and conduct meetings with contractors, consultants, and agencies to facilitate project delivery.
• Resolve disputes between project engineers and contractors; provide supporting testimony as needed.
