Job summary

Onni is seeking an Appliance Technician to diagnose, repair, and maintain residential appliances across multifamily properties in Chicago. You will handle diverse units, including refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers, and more, while complying with safety standards.

You will work with European and high-end appliances (Bosch, Blomberg) and communicate repair timelines clearly to residents and property staff. EPA 608 certification is required or obtainable within 90 days.

• Strong knowledge of electrical systems and wiring diagrams.

Job Description

The Appliance Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining residential appliances, including, but not limited to, refrigerators, laundry appliances, stoves, ovens, and dishwashers. This position will regularly interact with residents, property staff, and management to troubleshoot and repair appliance issues. The person in this position will provide a solid foundation in electrical, mechanical, and gas systems to diagnose and resolve issues quickly.

What Will You Do?

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

• Diagnose appliance malfunctions using wiring diagrams, schematics, technical manuals, and diagnostic tools, performing component-level troubleshooting to identify root causes.


• Repair and replace faulty parts on a variety of appliances, including refrigerators, freezers, ranges, ovens, cooktops, dishwashers, washers, dryers, and microwaves.


• Service European and high-end appliances, including compact and built-in units (such as Bosch and Blomberg), following manufacturer specifications and procedures.


• Inspect, service, and repair gas appliances and associated venting, following applicable codes and safety standards.


• Handle, recover, and recharge refrigerants in compliance with EPA Section 608 regulations and company policy.


• Perform preventive maintenance and safety inspections to extend equipment life and reduce repeat service calls.


• Determine whether an appliance should be repaired or replaced and communicate recommendations with supporting rationale to supervisors or property management.


• Communicate clearly and professionally with residents, property staff, and management regarding the nature of the problem, repair timelines, and any follow-up needs.


• Prioritize and manage a daily schedule of service requests, including urgent or emergency calls, to meet response time and quality expectations.


• Complete accurate and timely documentation for each service call, including work performed, parts used, time spent, and follow-up required.


• Follow all safety procedures, including electrical, gas, and refrigerant handling protocols, and use appropriate personal protective equipment.


• Perform other related duties as assigned.

What You Bring

• 2+ years of hands‑on appliance repair experience (or a trade‑school or apprenticeship background with strong aptitude)


• Working knowledge of electrical systems, reading wiring diagrams, and component‑level diagnostics


• EPA Section 608 certification for refrigerant handling (or ability to obtain within 90 days)


• Strong communication and customer service skills


• Brand‑specific training or certifications preferred (Bosch, Blomberg, Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, etc.)


• Experience servicing European and high‑end appliances preferred (Bosch and Blomberg compact and built‑in units)


• Experience with gas appliances and venting preferred


• Experience in multifamily property management settings preferred

Salary Range

$24 - $28 per hour
