Job description

Position Title: Animal Care Technician

Reports to: Department Supervisor

Location: Headquarters, Xenia, Ohio

Open: 365 days per year, typical shift is 7:00am to 3:30pm, with occasional overtime

Job Summary:

The Animal Care Technician supports all aspects of animal husbandry and maintenance for reptiles (including snakes, lizards, bearded dragons, leopard geckos, chameleons, and turtles) as well as other animals (spiders, frogs, insects, hermit crabs). Responsibilities include feeding, providing clean water and shelter, disease prevention and treatment, and breeding of the animals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Feed, water, and medicate animals according to instructions and schedules
  • Clean, disinfect, and organize animal habitats
  • Set up eggs for incubation
  • Observe animals for signs of injury, illness, or abnormal behavior
  • Provide general care for juvenile and adult animals; consult supervisor/veterinarian for advanced treatment
  • Maintain records on weight, health, diet, and medications
  • Report births, deaths, injuries, or irregular behaviors
  • Unload and store feed and supplies
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Genuine love for animals
  • Ability to handle various animals and feeder insects
  • Efficient and thorough with repetitive tasks
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Detail-oriented, reliable, and dependable
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time management and teamwork skills
  • Basic math, reading, and writing skills
Physical Requirements:
  • Work in temperatures of 85-90°F with high humidity
  • Good motor skills for repetitive motions
  • Prolonged standing, lifting, and carrying (up to 50 pounds occasionally, 25 pounds frequently)
  • Perform physical tasks such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, pulling, climbing, kneeling, crouching, and stooping
  • Learn to operate various tools and equipment
Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in animal husbandry or veterinary work is desirable.
