Animal Care Supervisor - Aquatics

The Cameron Park Zoo Seeks

A passionate and experienced animal care professional ready to take on a leadership role to join our team. We are seeking an ambitious aquatics professional who is familiar with modern husbandry practices and collection planning and has conservation experience. Our ideal candidate is SCUBA certified and has knowledge of and experience with Life Support Systems (LSS) and Ozone filtration. Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree in Zoology, Biological Sciences, or related field
  • Two (2) years of professional animal care work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with maintenance and operation of life support systems on both small and large systems
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications
  • Husbandry experience in a variety of marine and freshwater species of fish and invertebrates, reptiles, and elasmobranchs
  • SCUBA Certification Instructor level preferred
  • Specific technical skills training and state and federal certifications upon hire
Position Overview

Under basic supervision, manages the health and welfare of exotic and native animals in the City Zoo; supervises and trains Zookeepers; oversees daily care, husbandry, and nutrition of assigned animals.

Essential Functions
  • Manage daily care, husbandry, and nutrition of animals; resolve problems within scope of authority; duties may vary.
  • Inspect and maintain zoo exhibits to ensure animal health, prevent disease spread, and comply with regulations.
  • Manage staff; assign tasks; train and evaluate; develop skills; conduct performance reviews.
  • Perform daily rounds to evaluate animal health and welfare; ensure compliance with USDA and AZA standards.
  • Identify health issues and work with Veterinarian on treatment plans.
  • Manage food preparation and nutritional supplements.
  • Discuss animal health issues with Zookeepers and monitor behavior and eating habits.
  • Maintain records and update databases.
  • Monitor exhibit facilities and grounds for proper maintenance.
  • Assist with exhibit renovation and expansion plans.
  • Manage inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with public education and outreach programs.
  • Respond to afterhours emergencies as needed.

Minimum Starting Salary: $24 per hour, depending on qualifications
